Sergio Peres
Assembleia Legislativa do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul
Presidente
Currently serving his fourth term as a state deputy and as President of the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul, Sergio Peres was born in the rural area of Caraá—at the time a district of Santo Antônio da Patrulha. He is the seventeenth of 18 children born to small-scale farmers from Alto Grota, where he divided his time between farm work and classes at a rural school. Like his siblings, he moved to the metropolitan region at the age of 19 in search of better opportunities. He worked at Steigleder, in the metalworking industry, and was also an entrepreneur. An evangelical pastor and radio broadcaster since 1993, he began his community work through Christian projects, which served as a bridge to politics. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2002. In the most recent 2022 election, he received 74,685 votes across 424 municipalities, his best electoral performance to date. He is recognized for welcoming demands from leaders of all parties and from all regions of the state. In Parliament and with the state government, he has defended demands in the areas of health, rural production, infrastructure, education, social assistance, professional categories, accessibility, and public safety. In 2026, he assumes the presidency of the Legislative Assembly, proposing municipalism as the central theme of his management.
