He graduated from the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine USP (University of São Paulo), where he obtained master's and doctoral degrees, and completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Oxford. He was President of USP, President of the National Research Council (CNPq), during which time the National Institutes of Science and Technology (INCT) Program was created, and State Secretary of Health of the Government of the State of São Paulo.
