Established in 1996, the State Department of Traffic (DetranRS) is an autonomous agency under the Public Security Department. It is responsible for managing, overseeing, and executing traffic-related activities throughout Rio Grande do Sul, in line with the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). DetranRS’s core mission is to protect lives in traffic, primarily through monitoring the driver’s journey—from training and licensing to penalties when necessary—and managing the entire lifecycle of vehicles, from registration to dismantling or recycling.

With a team of just over 700 public servants, DetranRS coordinates a network of around 1,500 accredited companies that carry out vehicle control and driver training services across the state.
