The Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS) is a federal institution of free public education (linked to the federal government) that aims to offer humane, critical and civic education. It offers free courses in 17 cities in Rio Grande do Sul. The courses offered include high school courses together with technical courses, for those who have completed elementary school. Those who are studying high school at another educational institution (public or private) can take only technical courses at IFRS, in a technical course concurrent with high school. Another option is high school plus the integrated technical course in the Youth and Adult Education (EJA) modality, for those who are 18 years of age or older and have completed elementary school. Those who have completed high school can opt for a technical course after high school to obtain technical training or for an undergraduate degree, for higher education. IFRS also offers postgraduate courses, such as specializations and master's degrees, and extension courses. There are also free distance learning (EaD) course options , with course loads between 20 and 200 hours, which can be taken by anyone interested.
